Over 140 Dead or Missing in Mauritania Migrant Boat Incidents

More than 140 people have died or gone missing off the coast of Mauritania in attempts to cross from West Africa to Europe via the Canary Islands. This route is considered one of the most dangerous due to long distances, bad weather conditions, and overcrowded boats. The incidents revealed that a boat from The Gambia faced a crisis after running out of fuel, resulting in the loss of many passengers. Among them, 122 are still missing, while authorities rescued 37 people. Additionally, all passengers of another boat from Senegal were also saved. This year, 4,400 people have arrived in the Canary Islands through irregular routes, a 60% decrease compared to last year, due to increased scrutiny and agreements between the European Union, Spain, and North and West African countries.
