Somali regional elections amid voting debate

The Federal Government of Somalia intends to conduct direct elections in the states of Galmudug and Hirshabelle, after nearly six decades of a voting system based on clan divisions, in order to strengthen the democratic process and expand popular participation. The elections in Galmudug will take place on July 30th, and in Hirshabelle on August 20th, with around 200,000 voters participating. Although this is considered an important step towards transforming the country into a more democratic electoral system, political disagreements and opposition are hindering the credibility of the process. They emphasize the necessity of political and institutional consensus to ensure the integrity of the results, amid rising tensions and disputes since the return to direct voting.
