Guatemala evacuates near Fuego Volcano

Guatemala has declared a red alert following the eruption of the Fuego volcano, which is located 35 kilometers from the capital and is the most active volcano in Central America. The eruption, which began on Monday and increased in intensity overnight, prompted the evacuation of hundreds of residents from surrounding areas, especially in Sacatepequez, Chimaltenango, and Escuintla departments. Over the past years, thousands of people have been evacuated due to volcanic eruptions, with 215 people losing their lives and around 200 others missing in 2018 during lava flows. Additionally, more than 1,200 individuals were evacuated in 2023 due to gas and ash emissions.
