Seven accused of plotting candidate's assassination in Ecuador
The Ecuadorian prosecutor's office has officially charged seven individuals, including a former interior minister, a former deputy, and a businessman, with orchestrating the assassination of presidential candidate and anti-corruption investigator Fernando Villavicencio, just 11 days before the 2023 presidential elections. Villavicencio was killed after leading in opinion polls. Authorities accuse some of the suspects of planning and executing the assassination for a sum of one million dollars, in coordination with the Los Lobos gang. They have been charged as indirect perpetrators, with previous verdicts issued against five other defendants involved in the same case.
