Egypt's potential Mecca defense pact gains attention

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan spoke about the possibility of Egypt joining the "Mecca Agreement" alliance for collective defense, which is signed by Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. He clarified that there are technical points that could allow Egypt to join, but he pointed to political and legal obstacles, including issues related to the Muslim Brotherhood, relations with Israel, Libya, Sudan, Ethiopia, as well as Egypt’s ties with Iran and Syria. Fidan emphasized that the agreement is similar to Article 5 of NATO’s charter for collective defense and that it does not target any country directly. He added that it aims to enhance international maritime security and regional stability, with the potential to develop into a comprehensive regional security alliance.
