Drones Turn French Skies into Drug Routes

French gendarmerie forces have dismantled a drug trafficking network to Villefranche-sur-Sonne Prison using drones. They arrested five individuals, including a minor and four adults, and seized 500 grams of cannabis, 6,000 euros, a drone, and 18 batteries. The drones were used in more than 1,850 delivery operations inside the prison over a period of 51 days. The network operated systematically from two takeoff zones near the prison. These operations come amid an increasing number of smuggling attempts via drones, with authorities recording about 5,000 attempts in 2025. The criminal groups rely on paid services via social media platforms and have developed their structures to resemble traditional criminal organizations.
