China undertakes large-scale water transfer

The first phase of the water transfer project from southern to northern China has successfully moved over 90 billion cubic meters of water along the eastern and middle routes by August 2026, making it the largest water transfer project in the world. The central route has transferred more than 80 billion cubic meters, while the eastern route has transferred over 9.95 billion cubic meters. This has contributed to providing a stable, high-quality water supply to 48 cities and 195 million people since 2014. Additionally, more than 13 billion cubic meters of water have been diverted for ecological restoration of over 50 rivers, enhancing the sustainability of ecosystems and optimizing water resource utilization across the country.
