Xinjiang promotes quality cotton growth

The Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region in Northwestern China, the country's largest producer of high-quality cotton, has issued a local regulation to promote high-quality development of the cotton industry. The regulation, which includes 37 articles and covers all stages of the industrial chain, came into effect in July 2026. Its goal is to improve cotton quality, increase income for local ethnic communities, and ensure the stability of the cotton textiles industry. Xinjiang’s cotton sector is among the most mechanized in the world, with a mechanization rate exceeding 97 percent. In 2025, its cotton production reached approximately 6.165 million tons, accounting for 92.8 percent of the national output.
