A Damascus Criminal Court issued a death sentence against Waseem Al-Assad, a relative of the ousted Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, on charges of intentional murder. This came after evidence confirmed his involvement in forming armed groups in Eastern Ghouta and carrying out kidnapping, killing, torture, and arbitrary detention of civilians during the Syrian conflict. He was also proven responsible for acts of killing, torture, and enforced disappearance. His movable and immovable assets were seized following his arrest in June 2025. Additionally, in August 2023, the court issued a death sentence in absentia against Bashar Al-Assad and his brother Maher. Meanwhile, cases related to crimes against humanity continue to proceed within Syria.
