A new study has arrived at a detailed molecular map illustrating how genetic mutations associated with autism spectrum disorder influence protein interactions in the brain, thereby enhancing our understanding of the mechanisms underlying autism development. Using artificial intelligence and data from lab-grown brains, researchers identified more than 1,800 protein interactions, 87% of which had never been observed before. This map helps target protein interactions rather than individual genes, potentially facilitating the development of more precise and effective treatments. The findings, the largest of their kind in the field of neuropsychiatric disorders, also propose potential therapeutic pathways that have not been explored before—particularly regarding severe autism, which affects about 30% of individuals with the condition.
