Syria marks Missing Persons Day, Signs Red Cross Deal

Syria marks Missing Persons Day, Signs Red Cross Deal

The National Council for Missing Persons in Syria has launched the "Athar" platform for reporting missing and forcibly disappeared persons, aiming to create a unified registry that supports search efforts and the disclosure of the fate of the missing, as well as the families' right to know. This initiative coincides with the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearance. The platform also bolsters efforts to identify the missing through signing agreements with the International Committee of the Red Cross to establish a national DNA laboratory and to develop the technical capacities of personnel working in this field. Despite the launch of the program, the fate of approximately 130,000 to 300,000 individuals in Syria remains unknown, with over 177,000 cases documented since 2011 and 73 mass graves being documented by the committee. Investigations continue closely with the families of the victims, including legal proceedings to prosecute perpetrators of massacres. Significant legal and technical efforts are ongoing to determine the fate of the disappeared.
