Saudi Arabia's cheetah lineages identified

Scientists from the National Center for Wildlife Development in Saudi Arabia discovered seven naturally mummified cheetahs in caves near Arar city. Some of these date back more than 4,000 years. DNA analysis revealed that two lineages of cheetahs were present in the region—one closer to the African lineage and the other to the endangered Asian species. This is the first discovery of its kind to confirm the presence of cheetahs in the Arabian Peninsula and provides evidence of their diverse lineages and historical presence in the area. The findings support efforts to reintroduce cheetahs into Saudi Arabia to help restore ecological balance.
