U.S. Court Sentences Ex-Syrian Official
A U.S. court has sentenced former Syrian official Samir Othman Sheikh to 60 years in prison for crimes of torture against prisoners during his tenure as head of Adra Prison between 2005 and 2008, as well as for lying to U.S. immigration officials to obtain entry rights and citizenship. Evidence showed that Sheikh ordered and personally participated in torture using brutal methods, including the "flying carpet" device and hanging prisoners in shackles. He also transferred dissident prisoners and tortured them in an underground section.
