A video clip illustrating the abnormal movement of the respiratory cilia in a child suffering from a rare genetic disorder known as Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) won first place in the "Nikon" Little World Animated Competition. Using advanced microscopic imaging techniques, the footage revealed that the cilia do not move in a wave-like and coordinated manner, which prevents proper lung cleaning and leads to recurrent respiratory infections. The results highlight the importance of monitoring ciliary movement to better understand this disease and improve diagnostic and treatment methods. The competition was participated in by 347 institutions from 40 countries, aimed at stimulating scientific discoveries and advancing technological progress in microscopic imaging.
