Mauritania: Court invalidates opposition MPs

The Mauritanian Supreme Court has issued a final ruling rejecting the appeal filed by Deputies Mariam Sheikh Jenk and Qamoua Ashour Salem, affirming their disqualification from political rights for five years. This follows their conviction on charges related to insult and incitement during their statements on social media. The initial sentence was handed down in May 2023, with both deputies sentenced to four years in prison. However, it was later reduced to two years along with the deprivation of political rights. President Ghazwini issued a presidential pardon that annulled the imprisonment but maintained the disqualification from the rights. It is now expected that procedures to remove them from Parliament will begin, sparking political controversy over the restriction of MPs' freedoms and citizens' rights to representation, amidst the country's preparations for a national dialogue aimed at political reforms.
