Rare collision creates unique lunar crater

A major collision occurred on the surface of the Moon when a comet or asteroid roughly the size of three to six stories slammed into it between April 11 and May 22, 2024. This impact created a crater measuring 222 meters in diameter and 141 meters deep, making it the largest recently formed crater discovered in the Solar System since the beginning of monitoring such phenomena. This event is extremely rare, as a collision of this size is expected to happen only once every 132 years, making it one of the rare occurrences in space science. The research aims to understand the effects of such impacts on the Moon's surface, especially considering that its surface is filled with craters from billions of years of meteorite bombardment. Monitoring these collisions is crucial for assessing future threats to humans and infrastructure on the Moon, especially in the context of upcoming space exploration plans and human settlements.
