Chinese icebreakers Xuelong and Xuelong 2 return after North Pole mission

Typically, the Chinese icebreakers "Xuelong" and "Xuelong 2" have returned to Shanghai after nearly three months of a successful exploratory voyage in the Arctic, as part of their 16th scientific expedition. The mission yielded significant results in environmental monitoring and climate change studies, including notable increases in water temperatures in certain areas of the Arctic Ocean and the discovery of dense populations of polar cod in ice-covered regions. A total of 19 operations at ice stations and 95 iceberg deployment missions were carried out, enhancing China's understanding of climate variations and providing valuable data to support the management of the Arctic region. The expedition also achieved notable progress in satellite communications technology under polar conditions, with video calls made and data transmitted via satellite internet equipment.
