Bashiqa Baathist Base Restored to Iraq

Base Bashiqa, one of Turkey's most prominent military sites in northern Iraq since 2015, is being gradually returned to Iraqi sovereignty following an agreement between the two countries in September 2026. This step comes as part of a move to reinforce Iraq’s sovereignty and reduce tensions with Ankara, which denied any sovereign overreach and described its presence as support in countering ISIS and armed groups. Baghdad, on the other hand, considers the ongoing Turkish presence a violation of its sovereignty and a threat to its security. It is expected that Iraqi forces will take over management of the site after the Turkish troops’ gradual withdrawal, a move seen as an escalation in Iraq’s efforts to regain control of the region.
