France classifies Old Port raids as crime against humanity

A French court issued a ruling recognizing the mass arrests and forced deportations in Marseille in 1943 as a "crime against humanity," long before they were forgotten. These decisions came after investigations that have been ongoing since 2019, which revealed the complete destruction of Saint John’s neighborhood through explosions, the arrest and deportation of over 1,600 people—including around 800 Jews—to Nazi extermination camps, leading to many of their deaths and the obliteration of the area’s identity. This verdict is an official acknowledgment of the French state's responsibility and its partnership with the occupation authorities in carrying out these crimes. Although no criminal sentences have been issued against the perpetrators due to their deaths, this ruling remains a historic document that reinforces collective memory and puts an end to forgetting this tragic chapter.
