Italy Implements Niqab Ban and Language Quota

Italy has approved a ban on face coverings in schools, including the niqab and burqa, and has imposed restrictions on the presence of foreign students who are not proficient in Italian in classrooms starting from the 2027-2028 academic year. The decree specifies that the maximum percentage of such students will be 30% in the early grades, provided they have been enrolled in Italian schools for at least three years to prevent exceeding this limit. The goal of the decision is to promote facial recognition and reintroduce face-to-face interaction between students and their teachers, as part of measures aligned with the policies of the conservative government led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, which is moving toward stricter policies on immigration and education. This decree requires approval from the Parliament within 60 days to become law.
