The Yemeni government has minimized the repercussions of the Houthi escalation in the Red Sea, warning against the group’s use of modified Iranian weapons, including loitering missile systems capable of remaining airborne for up to 25 minutes and equipped with thermal tracking systems. These warnings come within a context of downplaying the danger to civil aviation safety, as the government believes that these weapons could threaten international flights, including humanitarian and UN flights, by intersecting with the southern Red Sea airspace. The government has called on the international community to undertake investigations, as well as to provide expert teams with information about launch sites and missile trajectories, in an attempt to include the issue within the framework of the UN sanctions system that bans arms supplies to Yemen. Through this step, the government aims to broaden international efforts to encompass the security of civil aviation among the threats facing Yemen, especially amid the escalating military threats from the Houthis.
