US engineer detained for Yemen Houthi support

U.S. authorities have taken over the case of the arrest of an electrical engineer from the Department of Energy on charges of supporting the Houthi group in Yemen. He is suspected of providing materials used in making explosives and drones, and of traveling to Yemen on an unofficial mission. The engineer, Ashton Hamid Al-Laboudi (51 years old), traveled to Yemen in September, and investigators informed him that he attempted to establish contacts with government officials there as part of an investigation into his support for the group and the manufacturing of chemical substances and drone parts. He faces charges of providing financial support to a designated terrorist organization internationally, and he is expected to stand trial soon for his suspected activities.
