Tigray Forces Take Back Mekelle Airport
Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) forces regained control of Mekelle Airport in the Tigray region in northern Ethiopia, a major stronghold of the opposition, in a move considered a significant setback for the ruling Tigray People's Liberation Front alliance. The group, supported by the government, announced that they had established full control over the airport and had begun combing the city, although this claim has not been independently verified by news agencies. This resurgence follows a counterattack by Ethiopian federal forces and their alliances, marking a dangerous escalation since the end of the civil war between 2020 and 2022, and it could threaten to expand the fighting to neighboring regions.
