Teboun: Aircraft Deployed to Niger Over Coup

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune confirmed that his country intervened militarily to prevent an attempted coup in Niger in August 2023, by sending military aircraft to Niamey. This action was in response to an attempt to oust President Mohamed Bazoum. He indicated that the intervention was a response to potential provocation from a foreign entity aimed at removing an Algerian ally and destabilizing the region, especially given the long shared border. Tebboune explained that Algeria issued constitutional decisions permitting the deployment of forces abroad with parliamentary approval, while maintaining its relations with Russia, China, and the United States. He also highlighted efforts to bolster foreign currency reserves despite IMF forecasts predicting a decrease to $29 billion by 2031. Additionally, his statements addressed tensions with Spain regarding the postponement of a summit between the two countries amid a diplomatic crisis with Morocco, emphasizing that Algeria is adopting a defensive stance to protect its sovereignty and security in the face of regional and international challenges.
