German army withdrawal from Iraqi Kurdistan

The German Ministry of Defense announced the completion of the German military’s mission in northern Iraq, with the last 28 soldiers evacuted, in response to the Iraqi government’s desire to withdraw all foreign forces. Since 2015, the German army has been supporting the international coalition against ISIS through training and arms supplies, with a force totaling 500 soldiers, making it Germany’s second-largest foreign deployment after the "Sea Guardian" operation. The results of this withdrawal mark a new phase for the country, amid warnings of increased violence or the potential return of ISIS, especially as security deteriorates due to the exit of international forces and the role of Iran-backed militias. Leaders, including Yazidi and Kurdish officials, expressed concerns about the diminished protection of minorities, while the withdrawal is seen as a loss for Germany’s efforts to promote stability and security in the region.
