African Union clarifies after Egypt surprise

The African Union Commission clarifies that its recent statement was not intended to assign responsibility for the tensions in the Horn of Africa to any neighboring country. Instead, it called for restraint and a halt to escalation, especially after diplomats were expelled from the respective capitals, in order to support regional peace and stability. The commission emphasized its respect for the sovereignty of nations and non-interference in their internal affairs, reiterating that its stance is limited to supporting diplomatic dialogue and preventing escalation. This comes at a time of tension between Egypt and Ethiopia over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and the ongoing military escalation in Ethiopia, with Egypt expressing surprise at the commission's statement and considering it an unclear attempt to intervene in an internal Ethiopian matter. Egypt reaffirmed its commitment to the principles of respecting sovereignty and non-interference.
