Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia summit update

A summit involving Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, and Somalia in El Alamein emphasized enhancing regional cooperation, reaffirming respect for each country's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and rejecting external interventions. The discussions focused on supporting Sudan's unity and territorial integrity, encouraging the Sudanese political process, as well as supporting Somalia's unity and sovereignty, combating terrorism, and empowering its institutions. The summit also highlighted the importance of freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, adherence to international law governing transboundary rivers—especially the Nile—and called for establishing a follow-up mechanism to ensure continued coordination of the summit's outcomes. Tensions between Ethiopia and Egypt over support for opposition groups, as well as strained relations between Eritrea and Ethiopia, have impacted the region. Additionally, a U.S. administration urged restraint to prevent escalation of crises that could have broader repercussions across East Africa.
