Nile Basin Leaders Reaffirm Cooperation
A quadripartite summit involving Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, and Somalia announced its rejection of any harm to the Nile River's upstream countries (Egypt and Sudan), supporting Sudan's unity and sovereignty. The summit also rejected external interventions in internal affairs and the support of mercenaries. Additionally, it affirmed support for the unity and territorial integrity of Somalia and rejected any interference or recognition of "Somaliland." The statements come amidst growing disagreements between Ethiopia and Egypt over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and Ethiopia's plans to establish a military base on the Red Sea. These remarks reflect the concern of the four countries over unilateral measures that threaten water shares and regional stability, especially amid escalating armed conflicts in Sudan and intensified tensions between Ethiopia, Egypt, and Sudan. The summit also agreed to establish a follow-up mechanism to hold regular meetings aimed at boosting cooperation, protecting water resources, and safeguarding national sovereignty.
