Iran sentences two men for January unrest
The Iranian authorities executed two men in connection with protests in the city of Isfahan. One of them, Ali Reza Sepahi, was scheduled to be executed last July and was transferred to the hospital after suffering a stroke, while the other, Ali Reza Rezaei, was executed. Public executions were carried out in front of their families and onlookers, amid international criticism of the disregard for human rights and torture during the trial procedures. Despite Sepahi's request for a retrial, which was accepted in September, the court rejected his appeal before carrying out the execution. Human rights organizations see these actions as evidence of politicized judiciary and ongoing human rights violations.
