Mauritania Steps Up Drug Crackdown

The article focused on the escalation of Mauritania's efforts to combat drug trafficking, highlighting the dismantling of two smuggling networks and the seizure of large quantities of drugs, including 162,000 ecstasy pills and 61 kilograms of other narcotics. Security operations indicate a variety of smuggling methods, involving cars and boats, with seizure quantities increasing significantly—such as 2.3 tons of cocaine by mid-2023. The risks associated with drug proliferation are also on the rise, as the country has shifted from merely being a transit point for drugs to becoming a market for consumption. This has led to stricter legislation, increased awareness campaigns, and efforts to dismantle major networks, all aimed at enhancing security and stability in the region.
