France expands student protests amid chaos claims
Student protests in France have grown significantly, with tens of thousands taking to the streets in around thirty cities, including Paris, to demand better educational conditions. Schools have been closed in about a quarter of the high schools, and students have faced police repression resulting in injuries to over 215 students and 700 security personnel. The government has blamed radical leftists for the escalation of the movement and accused Amnesty International of claiming that police used excessive and disproportionate interventions against protesters. They called for respecting the right to peaceful demonstration. The movement comes ahead of the presidential elections amid a tense political climate and calls for improvements to school buildings, reduced overcrowding, and alternatives to substitute for absent teachers.
