Measles Cases Surpass 1000 in Pennsylvania

The number of measles cases in Pennsylvania, USA, has surpassed 1,000, with 1,004 cases reported across 39 counties as of October 2026. The outbreak has resulted in five deaths and 198 hospitalizations, making it the largest since more than three decades. The outbreak began in late April, with less than 1 percent of those infected having received the MMR vaccine, despite increasing vaccination rates that exceeded 49,000 doses in August and 53,000 in September. Reports indicate that two doses of the vaccine provide lifelong protection with 97 percent efficacy against the disease. In response, the state of New York has declared a state of emergency due to the rising number of cases, with 108 infections recorded this year. The increase is concentrated in areas with low vaccination rates. These figures represent some of the highest rates of measles in the United States since 1991, amid public health concerns about a potential outbreak.
