Israel faces mental health challenges post-October 7

Israel is facing an unprecedented mental health crisis following the terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023. Approximately 39% of the population (three million people) are experiencing symptoms of mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety, with around 600,000 suffering from severe conditions. The problem is exacerbated by a shortage of medical personnel, resulting in treatment wait times exceeding six months. There is also an increase in the reliance on sedatives and alcohol among those affected, especially among those unable to afford private care. Additionally, there has been a rise in suicide rates among soldiers, with a sharp increase among reserve troops—rising from just one case per year before the war to 11 cases in 2024, and nine other cases under investigation in 2025. Supporting the mental health system, providing effective treatment, and increasing awareness about mental health are essential priorities to address this crisis.
