Henri Kagan and Kenso Sawa Nobel in Chemistry

French scientist Henri Kagan and Japanese scientist Kenso Sawai jointly won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2026 for their discovery of non-linear reactions and self-activation in asymmetric organic synthesis. Their discovery focuses on the phenomenon of "single-handed mirror symmetry," which characterizes most life particles, where amino acids exist in two mirror-image forms, but only one form is used in protein construction. Their achievements have helped chemists understand how this phenomenon arises, leading to improved design of drug manufacturing reactions that are more precise. This discovery is considered fundamental for developing medicines that interact with specific enantiomeric molecules, which are used in medical applications. The Nobel Prize is awarded annually by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and is worth 12 million Swedish kronor (about 1.2 million dollars).
