Gaza Post-October 7: Heavy Losses and High Costs

Following the October 7, 2023 attack carried out by Hamas against Israel, the Gaza Strip experienced widespread destruction and significant human and material losses. The direct number of casualties was approximately 74,250 killed and 175,278 wounded, with around 9,500 people reported missing. Over 510,000 housing units were damaged, and the initial direct damages exceeded $80 billion. The extent of destruction in schools, agricultural lands, and infrastructure was substantial, and hospital capacities were severely strained. The war resulted in thousands of civilian deaths and injuries, displaced more than two million people, and left many families in dire conditions, suffering from lack of safety, homes, and shelter. The hardships continued even after active combat ended, as the war's effects persist on the region. Analysts believe that the October 7 attack was uncalculated, and its consequences proved catastrophic for Palestinians; it did not achieve tangible political goals, and overall, it was disastrous for the Palestinian people, with a clear escalation in human and material losses.
