Scientists unveil first functional nuclear clocks
Two scientific teams in Vienna and Beijing have developed the world's first working nuclear clocks, using thorium-229 nuclei to measure time with high precision. These clocks represent a new generation of atomic clocks that rely on interactions between light and atomic nuclei rather than electrons, potentially enabling greater accuracy and wide-ranging applications such as navigation, data transfer, and fundamental physical research. Although these clocks are still in development and require further refinement, the results demonstrate the potential to achieve levels of precision surpassing traditional clocks, opening new horizons for physics and technological research.
