Why is the US advising against visiting a Georgia site

Bankisi Valley in Georgia is home to a history marked by extremist activities such as recruiting members for ISIS, although the situation has changed significantly now. Over the decades, the area has had a reputation for insecurity, especially after it was previously accused of links to terrorism. However, a 2023 report now describes it as a peaceful region, with increasing tourist activity. Community and international initiatives have begun organizing trips and workshops, including felt-making and baking, despite ongoing warnings from the U.S. State Department. The region is characterized by Sufi Islamic traditions, and locals participate in unique religious events, reflecting a growing cultural openness. Still, tourism in the area is relatively new and faces challenges due to halted foreign funding and legal changes. Nevertheless, the number of foreign visitors and tourist activities has started to grow as tour operators explore the area as a new tourist destination.
