Milk smuggling from Syria to Lebanon
A milk smuggling operation from Syria to Lebanon has been uncovered, involving underground hoses that were previously used to smuggle diesel fuel, in the border area of Maqraq al-Qaim. Currently, a concealed pipeline route is being used to pump liquid milk, with added water to disguise the activity and hide the milk's traces, raising concerns about the cleanliness and quality of the smuggled materials. The milk is being smuggled due to price differences between the two countries, with prices being higher in Syria than in Lebanon, which encourages smuggling activities that bypass official controls. This poses health risks, as the milk may be contaminated with remnants of oil and lacks necessary sanitary measures. Additionally, the smuggling of stolen cheeses is part of the broader phenomenon, raising questions about the safety and quality of these products reaching Lebanese markets outside official channels.
