Lebanese Christian Villages Worried About UNIFIL Exit

The cancellation of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission raises serious concerns in border villages in southern Lebanon. Areas such as Rameish, Dabl, and Ain Ibil rely on coordinating the movement and transportation of residents with international forces to ensure the continuity of daily life, including the movement of workers and the sustainability of economic activities. Residents fear losing jobs and logistical support, especially with the mission's end approaching on December 31, without an alternative entity to guarantee movement and security. This could lead to the isolation of these villages and an increase in security risks. Officials and deputies view the withdrawal of international forces without an alternative as a threat to Lebanon's sovereignty and as a factor that could escalate Israeli occupation. Moreover, the absence of forces puts civilians' lives at risk and undermines the legitimacy of the state. There’s an urgent need for the United Nations to assume its responsibility in protecting Lebanon’s sovereignty and people.
