Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas issued a presidential decree delaying the joint legislative and presidential elections until September 2027. He explained that the decision was made following extensive Palestinian consultations aimed at strengthening national unity and preparing the political and security conditions for the elections. The delay comes amidst ongoing Israeli assaults in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, as well as restrictions on movement and voting, in addition to the failure to implement security arrangements and reconstruction efforts in the Gaza Strip. The goal of the decision is to ensure the participation of all Palestinians and to ensure free and fair elections, with an alternative plan to form the National Council in case holding elections in Gaza or other areas becomes impossible.
