Saturn's moon aids in life's detection
The study reveals that the way the ocean spray freezes beneath the surface of Saturn's moon Enceladus helps concentrate salts and organic materials in small ice grains, making it easier to analyze them in search of potential signs of life. Specifically, in grains measuring between 0.4 and 4 micrometers in diameter, at least five main types of salts are present—such as sodium chloride, sodium carbonate, and sodium phosphate—with rare instances of grains containing more than one type of salt together. The findings indicate that slowly cooling the ocean water during freezing causes salts to gather in separate areas, which then break apart as they rapidly pass through cracks in the ice, thereby concentrating organic and rare materials. While the study does not confirm the existence of life, it suggests that analyzing individual grains could facilitate the detection of potential organic compounds. Future missions plan to utilize this method, with the European Space Agency intending to send a mission to Enceladus in the early 2040s.
