New Docodont Fossil Reveals Jurassic Mammal Diversity

A new species of mammal resembling the "Dokodont" family has been discovered, named "Megacauđa Songyi," dating back to the Jurassic period about 160 million years ago. It is considered the largest of its kind, measuring 52 centimeters in length and weighing approximately 2 kilograms. The study suggests that this animal was adapted for swimming and may have preyed on small animals, with evidence indicating behaviors such as swallowing and nursing seen in early mammalian ancestors. This discovery broadens our understanding of mammalian diversity during the Jurassic era and highlights the size of this species and details of its jaw structure, confirming that mammal-like creatures were larger than previously thought.
