India detains leaders labeled as cockroaches
The Indian police have arrested leaders of the "Cockroaches" movement, known as Kukuruch, after their attempt to enter the Jantar Mantar observatory in New Delhi during protests against the controversial amendments to the voter lists, which critics say serve the interests of the Bharatiya Janata Party led by Narendra Modi. Supporters of the party and opposition groups have organized nearly daily protests demanding the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar, the Chief Election Commissioner. It was announced that the official protest website was shut down and replaced with three new sites after protesters tried to access the site carrying the Indian flag and chanting slogans. These protests come amid accusations of electoral politicization and undermining democracy, with hundreds, including party leaders, having been arrested amid widespread tensions over the legitimacy of the electoral amendments.
