South Lebanon olive harvest disrupted by war
The article addresses the impact of the 2024 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah on the olive harvest season in southern Lebanon. The war has caused the destruction of olive trees and deprived farmers of access to their fields, leading to significant losses in production estimated at around half of the annual yield of 100,000 to 200,000 tons. Thousands of trees have been uprooted and burned, and agricultural areas have been damaged. There are also risks posed by unexploded ordnance, which hinder access to the fields and increase the danger of working there. The damages have resulted in increased economic costs and losses exceeding $300 million, along with the loss of an important historical and organic heritage. Meanwhile, farmers are seeking permits to harvest olives during a season that typically runs from mid-October to mid-November.
