Colombia's Shift from Supporting Palestine to Opening Jerusalem Embassy

Colombia has announced the opening of its embassy in Jerusalem, fulfilling the pledge of President Abelardo De La Espira, after restoring its relations with Israel. This marks a departure from the previous government's policy, which had severed ties with Israel and called for a boycott of coal exports to it in 2024 in protest against the war in Gaza. This shift in foreign policy is part of an effort to strengthen cooperation with Israel, including the relocation of the embassy to Jerusalem, a move that brings Bogotá and the Israeli government closer and signals a change in Colombia’s stance on the Palestinian issue. It reflects the new government's desire to enhance relations with Israel and the United States, despite domestic and international criticism, raising questions about its impact on Colombia’s position regarding Middle Eastern affairs and human rights.
