Human rights accuse Haftar's forces of executions

Human Rights Watch has revealed that Khalifa Haftar’s forces in eastern Libya have carried out a brutal wave of executions since late August 2023. At least 31 individuals have been executed after secret trials based on confessions obtained under torture. The organization confirmed that many of these detainees had been held since the conflict between 2014 and 2018, and that military courts convicted hundreds of civilians through clandestine trials, sentencing them to death despite the Libyan Supreme Court’s ruling that military courts lack constitutional authority to try civilians. HRW called for an immediate halt to these executions, highlighting blatant violations such as secret executions and families being deprived of the chance to bid farewell to their loved ones. The organization also urged governments supporting Haftar’s forces to intervene and put an end to these practices, which violate both Libyan and international laws.
