European Mission Aids Lebanon Border Security

The European decision to establish a support mission for Lebanon aims to assist the army and internal security forces in training and enhancing their capabilities to monitor land and sea borders and combat smuggling, while emphasizing that it will not undertake direct security tasks or monitor the eastern border with Syria. Its role is limited to providing training and technical expertise, without replacing the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which will continue its operations until the end of 2027. This step comes ahead of UNIFIL's planned withdrawal, with the goal of supporting Lebanon's sovereignty and restoring control over its institutions without interfering in sovereign decisions or field operations, focusing instead on collaboration with Lebanese institutions and achieving objectives related to security, maritime safety, and port security.
