Tunisian prisons face overcrowding

Tunisian prisons are facing a severe overcrowding crisis, as the number of inmates has increased from 23,000 to around 33,000 over the past two years, while their capacity does not exceed 17,000. This means that correctional facilities are accommodating twice their intended capacity. This overcrowding leads to deteriorating health and hygiene conditions and raises the risk of disease outbreaks, especially in the context of rising temperatures and vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with chronic illnesses, with fatalities recorded last summer. Human rights activists warn that this situation fosters tension and violence within prisons and threatens the lives of inmates. They are calling for the release of recent, transparent data, as well as the expansion of alternative sanctions and the implementation of measures to reduce pressure on prisons. Meanwhile, authorities deny any neglect in healthcare services.
