Britain releases hundreds early amid prison crisis
Britain has released around 650 prisoners early in England and Wales in an effort to reduce prison overcrowding as part of the second phase of a government program. This step comes amid controversy over the potential return of some offenders to criminal activity after their release, with some having been freed before serving their full sentences, raising concerns about security. The Ministry of Justice stated that early release is necessary to prevent the collapse of the justice system, and that the government is working to increase the number of prison places to meet the demand, with 3,300 spots provided out of a planned 14,000.
