The Russian authorities have detained a Japanese journalist named Yuki Imai on charges of collecting information about the defense capabilities on Sakhalin Island for Japanese security agencies linked to intelligence services. This incident comes amid escalating tensions between Russia and Japan over the disputed islands known as the Southern Kurils or Northern Territories. Moscow confirmed that this is not an isolated incident and stated that the arrest is part of measures against foreigners suspected of collaborating with foreign laboratories. Japan, for its part, denied involvement in any espionage activities and emphasized the need to protect its citizens. The islands remain a major obstacle to signing a peace treaty between the two countries. Tensions have increased following Russian visits to the islands and Moscow’s escalation of militarization in the region, alongside protests from Japan demanding the return of the territories. Meanwhile, Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine continues to impact bilateral relations.
